Full Review of Mahjong, Puzzle Your Brain With Legendary Game
Mahjong brings the ancient Chinese board strategy game to your very own Google Android or iOS device. Play in either classic, challenge or time attack mode and win to unlock more towers.
The app utilizes 2D tiles, and there isn’t much in the back, which lets you concentrate on the game. There’s a variety of visual effects to choose from, and the background is predominantly blue with the tiles in the fore. The large, clear graphics add to the overall visual impact of the game. Visuals’ score is 7 out of 10.
What Is It About?
There are three modes to choose from: Classic, which allows you to play for as long as you want; Time Attack, where the play is timed; and Challenge mode for advanced players where you have very little time to choose tiles. Winning the challenge mode unlocks more towers.
The game is the typical Chinese Mahjong, with 4 identical copies of the three tile variants with each suite labelled 1 to 9, totalling 136 tiles. There are 36 bamboo tiles, 36 characters and 36 circles, and an additional 16 wind tiles and 12 dragon tiles. The goal is to get a ‘mahjong’ which is 4 sets of tiles and 1 pair.
Winning in Challenge Mode unlocks more towers. You have hints throughout the game which aids your strategy. You will also get a new shuffle feature with the latest version if you are completely out of moves.
Building the different tower shapes is just as simple as tapping and moving tiles around by swiping. The controls are really simple, and the screen is uncluttered which allows you to move around fluidly. That’s quite convenient, considering it was my first time playing.
Both the Android app and iOS version are free to get, but there are in-game purchases for unlocking new features and also getting an ad-free version. You can play the game without these digital purchases though. The score is 8/10.
To Replay or Not To Replay
I liked the game and would replay it again, mainly because it offers you different modes to play in. Challenge mode was especially challenging and yet still exciting. Unlocking the towers once you complete this level gives you the steam to go for higher levels. I like how this game challenged my thinking. Replay Value is quite high and deserves a score 9 out of 10.
Is It Good?
There are many Mahjong app creators, but this particular version is a leader when it comes to Mahjong. I’d recommend the game to anyone who is an old player or one who is still learning. The Google Play app for Mahjong and its iOS variant highlights possible moves and gives hints which is excellent, especially for new learners. I like the large UI elements as I am myopic and need to squint really hard to see clearly. Having different shapes of towers also adds to the overall excitement of the game. The app no longer crashes, and I don’t experience any freezing on my device anymore. The gameplay is simple and the updates offered by 1C Wireless have sorted out some of the bug crashes that the earlier versions experienced. All in all, it’s an excellent app!
