Zynga brings the original Wizard of Oz to life with this beautifully designed Match 3 and puzzle title game for both iOS and Google Android. Glinda, the Good Witch, directs your steps as you journey through the emerald city to meet the Wizard of Oz, with tons of fun and adventure.
The graphics of this leading app are quite beautifully designed, combined with significant audio effects. There’s lots of color and depth to the game, and although the design is primarily Match 3 2D, the propensity of great characters such as Glinda to pop up and beautiful scenery in Emerald city make the graphics amazing. The use of brilliant on-screen power-ups also brings the app for Wizard of Oz to life. Visuals of the game deserve the score of 9 out of 10.
What is it about?
As Dorothy, the protagonist, you travel on the Yellow Brick Road through Emerald City to meet the Wizard of Oz, completing different puzzles and thus moving higher up the levels. Making 3 matches of the different tiles such as the purple hearts, red roses, blue ribbon and yellow bricks clears them from the board.
Matching 4 or more tiles provides you with power-ups, such as Glinda’s power-up for removing L or T shaped tiles, a crystal ball that removes all tiles of a similar color on the game board, butterflies which eliminate hazards, or lollipops to change tile colors.
Fight against the Wicked Witch of the West and collect extra tiles and abilities to defeat her. Unlock different characters and explore the magical lands of Oz, all the way to meeting the Great Wizard.
The controls on both the Android app and iOS versions are a simple combination of tap-and-swipe, which are quite responsive and convenient for this Match 3. There isn’t any need for on-screen buttons, and you can simply tap on a power-up if you want to activate it. This removes any potential clutter from the screen. Moreover, the controls are entirely up-to-date.
Both the Google Play app for Wizard of Oz and its App Store variant are free. There are however in-app purchases such as Gold packs ($4.99-$49.99), Tin Man Chopping ($5.99), and Good Witch Magic ($3.99). Though you can play without these, you won’t enjoy the game too much, and progress will be significantly slower. The score of this point is 8/10.
To replay or not to replay
For me, the app has high replay value because of its numerous levels and the character variety. It also stays true to the original Wizard of Oz story. Unlike another Match 3 apps, this one has a real storyline behind it, and the characters, scenery and multiple locations all add to that excitement. The inclusion of super items also makes me look forward to the next level. Replay value is 8.5 out of 10.
Is it good?
The game is exciting, and the fact that there is an app for iOS and Android means anyone can enjoy it. The game offers you the ability to compare your performance to others and even allows you to get a star rating. With all the power-ups you won’t get stuck on one level, although you need to purchase some.
You’ll get plenty of updates on your iPad, iPhone or Android which means you won’t keep getting glitches while playing, and the latest version also runs quite nicely.
It’s a great app, and I’d recommend it to anyone.
